Simplifying complex wifi operations through intuitive design

Ray is an intelligent wifi router that is equipped with a comprehensive mobile app. The mobile app allows Ray’s users to easily control who can access the network, when and how they can do it. That’s a lot of actions, all of which would be performed by users across various demographic ranges. This meant the need for simplicity, intuitiveness and smoothness in the mobile app. That’s where we come into the frame.

Adapting to mobile screen behaviour of a wide user range

  • With Ray, our challenge was to cater to a very broad spectrum of audience. Consider the persona of a homemaker who needs to prioritise the amount of time kids are allowed internet access, as opposed to another user who is a corporate manager concerned about data security when guests access the company network. To be useful to all users across an entire spectrum, maintaining scalability became a very important aspect throughout the process.
  • Coupled with scalability, was the need to maintain simplicity. We needed to maintain simplicity for users with moderate to low technical know-how. Guided by these principles we derived the visual language, which reflects the core attributes of the product like minimalism, security and user-friendliness.

Achieving a quick and informative onboarding workflow

  • Hand holding first time users while onboarding
  • Simple step-by-step guide for hassle-free installation
  • For most B2C applications, onboarding new users is one of the most challenging workflows. If the number of steps are very few, we risk imparting inadequate information. On the other hand, if the steps are too many, the user may get frustrated, lose interest and skip reading, only again to being misinformed or never returning to the app.
  • In order to strike a balance between quick and informative, we designed a simple five-step process for onboarding to ensure installation hand-holding.

Designing seamless experience for all action points

Designing seamless experience for all action points

  • Designing an intuitive dashboard for multiple functionalities
  • Creation of user groups with different access selectivity
  • Designing for easy accessibility to multiple devices
  • After a quick setup via the mobile app, all connected devices would immediately start using the Ray Wifi Network. The app required that admin users be able to monitor and control usage through the dashboard. Creating the dashboard that's able to handle multiple scopes of actions was a stimulating design experience.
  • We made provision to accommodate separate user groups, like Kids, Guests, First floor etc. and assign access permissions selectively to each user group. Each device needed to be managed independently without disturbing usage by other devices. For bigger spaces like offices, multiple Ray units were possible to be installed, managed and monitored via a singular dashboard.

Building a game-changing home-screen

  • Designing an intuitive and comprehensive home-screen
  • Avoidance of visual data overload despite it being data-heavy
  • Simple depiction of complex information systems
  • The home screen of the app was a crucial part in the design process. Once the initial setup is done, this would be the only screen that the user would return to, every now and then. We wanted to make it comprehensive enough to provide all answers at a glance while maintaining the aesthetic simplicity of the product.
  • Following the method of rapid wireframing for complex information systems, we brainstormed multiple ways for laying out information on this screen. A lot of the initial work involved paper and pencil scribbling. The final design was a balance of numbers and graphs. It was simple and intuitive, just as we wanted.

Test the speed of your internet instantly

Without any fuss over switching devices or logging in or getting confused with the router itself, the speed can be tested in a giffy. With very clear indications for download and upload speed user gets a clear indication of numbers and hence can take informed decision based on the results.

Easily analyse historic trends

The internet usage can be easily seen for any given point in time in the past and comes handy when you need to spot exceptions or identify spikes for example. This data can be easily shared with anyone.

Manage internet usage in granular fashion

You can create groups and set time limit for internet access. Even devices can be tracked for usage and can be easily scheduled for a pause.
